The Drag King Book Judith Halberstam & Del LaGrace Volcano $50.00 This book is the product of collaboration between Judith Halberstam (Female Masculinity, In a Queer Time and Place) and Del LaGrace Volcano (transgender photographer). It is a visual feast of drag king photography accompanied by analyses of drag king culture, and profiles of many performers. The Drag King Book has become a defining text exploring drag king culture and performance. In a world where the concept of masculine women is still often treated with scorn, this book is a tribute to the beauty, vitality and diversity of the unique drag king subculture. |

The Trials of Radclyffe Hall Diana Souhami $22.00 I first read this book in hardback five years ago, and it marked the beginning of my obsession with historical lesbian biographies. Diana Souhami is a rare find – a biographer who transforms lesbian lives into beautifully told stories. Radclyffe Hall, the infamous author of the lesbian classic The Well of Loneliness, led an amazing life as an English aristocrat, and cross dressing lesbian writer, at the turn of the 20th century. She rubbed shoulders with the likes of Gertrude Stein, Natalie Barney and Romaine Brookes. The biography follows Radclyffe’s evolution from a child called Margeurite into an adult who preferred to be known as John. Hall eventually became embroiled in a lengthy legal case contesting the banning of her lesbian novel in the United Kingdom. Her relationships with Mabel Batter, and the fascinating Una Troubridge are chronicled in all their complexity and drama. |

The Orchard Drusilla Modjeska $21.00 This book was not an easy read for me, but it stayed with me long after I finished it. I often refer to the concepts Modjeska articulates in The Orchard to explain aspects of my own experience. For me this book is about love…in the true sense of the word. The Orchard is a tapestry of voices and stories about love, fidelity and truth. Through this Modjeska weaves the history of Stella Bowen, a relatively unknown Australian artist. Modjeska’s insights into the complex creatures that are human relationships are powerful and poignant. Well worth the energy it takes to see this book through to the end. |

The
Red Tree Shaun Tan $14.95 "Sometimes the day begins with nothing to look forward to…" The Red Tree is marketed as a children’s book, but for me it is a work of art that speaks to adults and children equally. Grief, fear, isolation and finally, hopes are articulated through Tan’s sumptuous images and phrases. I have given this book as a gift to family and friends on many occasions and I will continue to. The Red Tree says so much with so few words – it truly is breathtaking. |

| Assume Nothing Rebecca Swan $65.95 This is the ultimate queer coffee table book! A collection of black and white photography with a common theme of gender fluidity, and it includes images ranging from female masculinity to male to female transsexuals. Respect and homage run through Swan’s photography – whose subjects include the famous Georgina Beyer (the first elected transsexual MP in the world), Dred’s (Mack Daddy, New York Drag King) and Sydney local, Megan. The book contains a forward by Judith Halberstam and remains mouth-watering from beginning to end. |
