Dangerous Families: Queer Writing on Surviving Mattilda Sycamore (ed) $34.95 Dangerous Families is a collection of stories written by survivors of childhood abuse. There are no rules here about what sort of abuse may be included or literary rules about how it must be expressed. The style of writing and poetry reflects the fractured and fragmented existence of the authors. Like many survivors of childhood abuse, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and other queer authors use writing as a way of coping with the trauma they have endured. In each piece of writing is a grain of hope, a message that each author is still here and still standing. Dangerous Families is not designed to be a recovery or therapy based book, however it is a creative and sometimes political account of people’s experiences. |

Dan and Diesel Charlotte Hudson and Lindsey Gardiner $17.95 A beautiful children’s book about the bond between a boy and his Guide dog. The narrator, Dan’s little brother, idolises Dan and is a good medium for illustrating Dan’s many strengths and talents. When Diesel, Dan’s wonder dog, goes missing Dan’s world is poignantly illustrated with bold and confusing images and sounds that would normally be filtered through Diesel. Diesel is also alone, and desperate to get back to his “special place”, the spot on Dan’s lap where he rests his nose. The text in this book literally jumps off the page through the different fonts and the illustrations are sketchy and rough suggesting movement and fun. Effective contrasting of bright and dark colours shows Dan and Diesel’s worlds together and apart. All round fantastic kids book with a positive portrayal of a young blind person. |

Fun Home Alison Bechdel $39.95 If you are a fan of graphic novels or Alison Bechdel’s Dykes To Watch Out For series then you must read this book. Bechdel’s memoir of the first 20 or so years of her life is a masterpiece. Merging her own life story with that of well-known literature, Bechdel critically explores her life, her father’s and the bond between them. The sexuality of father and daughter is central to the story and while the two are close it remains a barrier between them. Somewhere between cartoon and life drawing and using only black and shades of a blue-green to colour her pictures Bechdel’s artwork is compelling. A fabulous memoir presented in the most interesting of ways. |

Drag King Dreams Leslie Feinberg $27.95 Drag King Dreams has been criticised as nothing more than an updated version of Feinberg’s previous novel Stone Butch Blues. I disagree. The two books do have a lot in common including leading characters who wear their politics on their sleeves and whose gender never fits neatly into a box. However, the books are set in drastically different times and the characters face radically different challenges. Max Rabinowitz, the main character in Drag King Dreams, is a disillusioned activist working in the gay club scene in Manhattan post 9/11. Max is searching for a reason to keep fighting in an increasingly dark world. Feinberg crafts confronting, complex characters who live their overt and uncompromising political ideals. A thought-provoking book about those who refuse to fit in. |
